MTAC History: Leather Backing Evolution

Friday, February 3, 2017

The Comp-Tac MTAC holster is 10 years old in 2017. During its first 10 years the leather backing changed one time, learn why!

MTAC Circa 2007The MTAC is a Hybrid holster that came from an idea sparked by Comp-Tac’s owner Gregg Garrett. Garrett wanted to design a holster that combined the comfort of leather with the durability of Kydex. Garret had worked with Kydex a lot but didn’t have as much experience in working with leather. He was able to find a company, Minotaur Leather, to help him design a leather backing. The backing needed to have two key features; be perfectly sized to balance coving the firearm without being too large and to have two layers so that when you attached the Kydex front you didn’t have any of the hardware touching your skin.

With Minotaur’s help Garrett introduced the Minotaur MTAC Holster. The MTAC (Minotaur Tuckable, Adjustable, Cant) had a lot of specific details that were worked into the design. The leather backing plate of the Minotaur is two thicknesses of leather to cover the fasteners, but only one thickness at the widest parts of the pistol.

The Minotaur MTAC became wildly popular. Over the next couple of years it sold many holsters for a variety of different firearm makes and models. Customers were thrilled with the feel of the holster, but came back with one point of feedback on the leather. While the loved the size and thickness, some customers were encountering an issue with the width of the sweat guard at the topmost part of the holster. For some firearms with an extended thumb safety the topmost part of the holster was a little too narrow and interfered with the safety.

MTAC Leather Gen 1 vs. Gen 2To help customers and provide the best product possible in April of 2010 Minotaur decided to upgrade the leather backing to a Generation II with a wider top piece. This changed the hole pattern very slightly on the Kydex portion but it allowed the holster to stop interfering with firearm’s safety resulting in a better product overall.

In 10 years the MTAC’s leather backing has only needed to change one time to help serve our customers better.
